Maths at St Sidwell’s

At St Sidwell’s, White Rose Maths provides the foundation for our maths teaching from Year 1 into Year 6. WRM provides a progression that is in line with the National Curriculum Expectations and supports children and staff with next steps in learning and teaching as they build and develop maths skills and knowledge.

In EYFS, we use the shape and space elements of WRM to supplement our curriculum as the number and calculation element is planned around the Mastering Number Programme. This programme aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children by the end of Reception. The children also develop their maths through play, chanting, singing and the continual provision that they are exposed to in their daily activities.

We also implement Mastering Number alongside our White Rose Maths, in our Year 1 and Year 2 classes, as we emphasise securing the foundations in basic number. We feel that these are essential to ensure our children’s understanding and progression within mathematics. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and confidence and flexibility with number.

Throughout our curriculum, there is an emphasis on ensuring mastery, embedded understanding and fluency, before moving on to the next stage in the progression. Each year group is exposed to and encouraged to develop, their understanding through manipulatives, pictures, abstract representations (CPA) including mathematical symbols and numbers, and a growing mathematical vocabulary.

Children are taught how to apply mathematical strategies and how to choose which is best- suited to solve particular problems. They develop skills in discussion and explanation as they reason about their maths and make their own effective decisions.

The White Rose Calculation Policies support teachers and school staff in ensuring that there is consistency throughout the school. As highlighted above, children should be able to demonstrate thorough understanding at each stage of their curriculum – problem-solving, fluency and reasoning- before progressing. Teachers use thorough diagnostic assessments to support accurate judgements to enable them to help children address any gaps in their mathematical learning by implementing further support and scaffolding.

Children at St Sidwell’s receive opportunities to discuss their maths, to make and explain decisions about how to solve problems efficiently and accurately. As stated on our Curriculum page, our aim is for our children to become confident mathematicians who enjoy and embrace the subject and its challenges, make connections between what they know and what they are learning, and all the while understand the importance of maths as a key element of their education. The progression in learning encourages depth and readiness before attempting next stages.
