Jigsaw

At St Sidwell's we plan our PSHE lessons from Jigsaw, which is a mindful approach. It is a progressive and spiral scheme of learning. Jigsaw PSHE ensures that learning from previous years is revisited and extended, adding new concepts, knowledge and skills, year on year as appropriate. The table, linked below, draws out the spiral knowledge and skills progression within all six Puzzles (units of work) including the key vocabulary used in each year group; explicit links to the DfE statutory Relationships and Health Education outcomes have been made in each Puzzle.

Intent

Jigsaw holds children at its heart, and its cohesive vision helps children understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world. With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw 3-11 properly equips schools to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration, focus and self-regulation.

Implementation

Our PSHE curriculum is delivered through Jigsaw: 3-11, which is a whole school progressive and spiral scheme of learning.  This approach to the implementation of PSHE (including statutory RHE) helps to ensure depth, accurate subject knowledge, detailed planning and building on prior learning. We place strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. Jigsaw lessons include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus. To ensure consistently high standards, learning from previous years is revisited and extended, adding new concepts, knowledge and skills, year on year as appropriate. RHE (relationships and health education) is an important part of this spiral approach to the PSHE curriculum.

Jigsaw PSHE is taught as discreet weekly sessions, which are organised within half-termly PSHE topics. Short mindfulness practice sections are incorporated into each Jigsaw PSHE session, along with opportunities for children to work individually, in pairs, small groups or as a whole class team. Teachers should tailor the sessions to the specific needs of their classes and ensure that teaching is engaging, broad and balanced. All children (3-11) explore the same PSHE theme each half term by following the Jigsaw units. Each unit is launched in a half-termly whole-school worship.

Jigsaw consists of six half-term units of work (Puzzles), each containing six lessons (Pieces) covering each academic year.

  • Term 1: Being Me in My World
  • Term 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)
  • Term 3: Dreams and Goals
  • Term 4: Healthy Me
  • Term 5: Relationships
  • Term 6: Changing Me (including Sex Education)

Every Piece has two Learning Intentions, one specific to Relationships and Health Education (PSHE) (in purple) and the other designed to develop emotional literacy and social skills (in green). The various teaching and learning activities are engaging and mindful of different learning styles and the need for differentiation and the Early Years (EYFS) planning is aligned to the National Early Years Framework. Each lesson is built upon a Jigsaw Charter which underpins the behaviour and respect that is the basis for each lesson.

Impact

The impact of our PSHE curriculum is that children leave St Sidwell's having developed the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepared for life and transition to the next phase of education. PSHE at St Sidwell's enables children to:

  • Have a sense of purpose
  • Value self and others
  • Form relationships
  • Make and act on informed decisions
  • Communicate effectively
  • Work with others
  • Respond to challenge
  • Be an active partner in their own learning
  • Be active citizens within the local community
  • Explore issues related to living in a democratic society
  • Become healthy and fulfilled individuals, both physically and mentally

We measure impact through the assessment of pupil’s work, pupil interviews and teacher’s observations based around class and individual discussions.

Assessment in Jigsaw is both formative and summative.
